No one likes to be dry…..
Especially during winter months. Usually after a hot shower, I’ll slather on some avocado oil, but I realized one day that I had run out. I went to look for some other kind of moisturizer (ironically in the pantry) and I found a jar of organic, unrefined, expelled-pressed virgin coconut oil. Now usually I use coconut oil for frying corn chips, making soap, putting in smoothies to thicken them up, and even just eating a spoonful if I feel like it, but it dawned on me that this would be a fantastic salve for my skin. I know that coconut oil is by no means a new discovery in the beauty category, but it’s definitely overlooked. In this day and age where there are more lotions to choose from than which pair of jeans to buy at the mall, this completely sustainable renewable moisturizer is an excellent alternative to lotions that contain chemically made additives and unnatural fragrances. Not to mention a coconut tree will fruit up to 13 times a year! Talk about renewable sources right?
Each and every one of us have our own natural scent. After straying away from conventional perfumed lotions, I now find that intense fragrances are almost too strong for my nose. There is just something about your own natural personalized scent that is just too special to cover up!
However, there is a trick to using oils as a moisturizer. You have to apply right after you towel off from the shower so that the oils can absorb into your skin and not leave you with a greasy feeling. If you use it when dry, you’ll feel oily and slick all day which personally is just not for me.
Don’t worry if your coconut oil is in solid form. Just rub some between your palms and it’ll just melt and warm nicely with your body temperature.
Same goes if your hair is feeling particularly dry. Just take a pea-sized drop of coconut oil/butter and smooth it through your hair.
So go out, get some coconut oil and give it a try. You’ll feel amazingly soft and supple … and smell like you belong on a deserted island!
Until next time!
